Unsightly moles can detract from your overall appearance, impair your confidence and, in rare cases, become precancerous. When this occurs, Dr. Farzaneh will commonly recommend a procedure to remove the mole, restoring a more attractive facial appearance and preventing any future complications.

What is mole removal?

Mole removal is a specialized procedure designed to remove precancerous or benign moles using surgical or laser techniques.

Many patients choose to have their moles removed for solely cosmetic purposes or as a precautionary measure. Depending on the precise nature of your mole, as well as your unique needs, Dr. Farzaneh will advise on which of the following mole removal techniques will be most appropriate:

Shave excision. Dr. Farzaneh uses this option for moles that are raised above the skin. During the procedure, he will apply a local anesthetic to the area surrounding the mole, before using a very small, sharp scalpel on the surface so the mole is flush with the surrounding skin.

The punch biopsy technique. Reserved for smaller moles, this option involves using a specialized device to “punch out” a cylinder-shaped piece of skin.

Excisional surgery. Moles that are flat or malignant typically need to be removed with excisional surgery. During this procedure, Dr. Farzaneh will cut the mole out entirely and close the wound with stitches.

Laser mole removal. Small, flat moles that are black or brown in color tend to respond best to laser mole removal. Typically, this option requires between one and three treatments for the mole to be removed in its entirety.
